The District of Columbia has won back-to-back Miss USA titles.
Kara McCullough, a 25-year-old chemist working for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was crowned Sunday during the event that took place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on the Las Vegas Strip. She will go on to compete on the Miss Universe contest.
The runner-up was Miss New Jersey Chhavi Verg, a student at Rutgers University studying marketing and Spanish. The second runner-up was Miss Minnesota Meredith Gould, who is studying apparel retail merchandising at the University of Minnesota.
Fifty-one women representing each state and the nation's capital participated in the decades-old competition.

McCullough was born in Naples, Italy, and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She wants to inspire children to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Last year, District of Columbia resident Deshauna Barber became the first-ever military member to win Miss USA.
The three finalists were all asked to explain what they consider feminism to be and whether they consider themselves feminists. They modeled their final looks of the night during a performance of Pitbull's "Options" featuring Stephen Marley.

The beauty pageant this year included five women who immigrated to the U.S. at a young age and now as citizens hoped to represent the nation on a global stage. Verg and the women representing Florida, North Dakota, Hawaii, Connecticut and New Jersey told The Associated Press this week they have faced challenges and opportunities as immigrants.
The contestants' remarks stand in stark contrast to the scandal that enveloped the pageant in 2015, when then-part owner and now U.S. President Donald Trump offended Hispanics when he made anti-immigrant remarks in announcing his bid for the White House.
Trump co-owned The Miss Universe Organization with NBCUniversal, but the network and the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision quickly cut ties with him, refusing to air the show. Trump sued both networks, eventually settling and selling the pageant to talent management company WME/IMG.
The show kicked off with a performance from a Cirque du Soleil show — a Las Vegas staple — based on Michael Jackson songs. The contestants took the stage as Jackson's "Black or White" played and acrobats performed.
CMA Award-winner Brett Eldredge performed his new single "The Long Way" as the women modeled their evening gowns.
Julianne Hough, Ashley Graham and Terrence J. hosted the show.

Miss USA Kára McCullough Clarifies Controversial Health Care Comment: 'I Do Believe It Should Be a Right'

Newly crowned Miss USA Kára McCullough has clarified the controversial comment she made about health care during Sunday’s live competition in Las Vegas.
The District of Columbia contestant drew social media ire after she called health care a “privilege” during the question-and-answer portion of the competition. However, she reversed her answer during an appearance on Good Morning America Tuesday — instead deeming it a “right.”

“I am privileged to have health care and I do believe that it should be a right,” McCullough, 25, told co-host Michael Strahan. “I hope and pray moving forward that health care is a right for all worldwide.”

McCullough, who is a nuclear scientist at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, also explained why she gave her initial answer during the competition: “I just want people to see where I was coming from. Having a job, I have to look at healthcare like it is a privilege.”
The pageant winner’s initial response came near the end of the competition, when McCullough and four other contestants faced the question-and-answer portion of the show. She was asked whether “affordable health care for all U.S. citizens is a right or a privilege.”

“I’m definitely going to say it’s a privilege,” McCullough responded to Julianne Hough at the time. “As a government employee, I am granted health care. And I see firsthand that for one to have health care, you need to have jobs. So therefore, we need to continue to cultivate this environment that we’re given the opportunities to have health care as well as jobs to all the American citizens worldwide.”

In addition to the health care social media firestorm, viewers also reacted to McCullough’s response when asked if she considered herself a feminist.

“So as a woman scientist in the government, I’d like to lately transpose the word ‘feminism’ to ‘equalism,’ ” McCullough, who started an outreach program called Science Exploration for Kids, said on Sunday. “I don’t really want to consider myself — try not to consider myself like this die-hard, you know, like, ‘Oh, I don’t really care about men.’ But one thing I’m going to say, though, is women, we are just as equal as men when it comes to opportunity in the workplace.”

McCullough was named the winner over first runner-up Miss New Jersey, Chhavi Verg, and second runner-up Miss Minnesota, Meridith Gould.

Her win marked back-to-back victories for the District of Columbia after Deshauna Barber took home the crown in 2016.

I did not want to be crowned Miss Universe: 'Wonder Woman' Gal Gadot

It will be fair to say there has not been any female super-hero till date who has created as many ripples as the protagonist of the DC super-hero flick Wonder Woman has. And needless to say, former beauty queen Gal Gadot's portrayal of Wonder Woman in the recent movie is beyond par and for reasons justifiable, people cannot stop gushing over her power-packed performance. Given the fact that Gal was pregnant while filming the movie has got her only as many fans and admirers for showing sheer dedication towards her work. That's indeed super-heroic! But did you know that she was just not interested in competing at the Miss Universe pageant where she represented her country Israel in 2004?

In an interview with a magazine, Gal is seen revealing her reason for her poor performance at the Miss Universe pageant in 2004.

When asked her about winning the Miss Israel 2004 pageant she says, "I never thought I would win and then I won and it scared me."

Although representing your country is a matter of great pride and responsibility, but such was not the thing with our Wonder-woman. She did not even want to be a pageant queen at the first place. Talking about her experience at the Miss Universe 2004 pageant she says, "I was very naughty. I wasn't behaving. I am a really good girl, but because I was afraid I am going to win again because I did not want to win the Miss Israel pageant and I won. I figured oh no, I don't want them to choose me again, so I came down late for rehearsals. I wasn't wearing the right evening gowns for breakfast. I even remember Paula Abdul, she was one of the judges there. She was asking me a question and I was like, 'I am sorry, English not so good.'"

Well, we are just glad today that she did indeed consider acting as a profession. Check out her interview in which she talks about her pageant days.

Miss America 1944 Venus Ramey Passes Away

Atlantic City, NJ (June 19, 2017) -  The Miss America Organization honors the memory of Miss America 1944 Venus Ramey, who passed away Saturday at the age of 92. Venus hailed from Ashland, Kentucky, but entered the Miss America Competition representing the District of Columbia, where she moved to work for the war effort during World War II.

Venus entertained in military service camps, sold war bonds, and toured in Vaudeville. In addition to a citation from the United States Treasury Department for her work in the War Bond effort, Venus Ramey’s picture was painted on the side of fighter planes. These planes made sixty-eight raids over war-torn Germany and never lost a man. At a time when it seemed the country was losing the war, this incredible story was reported by the Associated Press and bolstered the nation’s morale.

During Venus' reign, Miss America was seen as a political activist for the first time, as Venus worked with Senator Kaper of Kansas and Congressman Somner of Missouri in publishing their bills to gain suffrage for the District of Columbia, as well as other Members of Congress to enact women's rights legislation.
Venus leaves behind a lasting legacy. Her memory will live on in the hearts of everyone in the Miss America family and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
