Sheynnis Palacios, a 23-year-old communications graduate representing Nicaragua, has been crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador on November 18.

Sheynnis becomes the first woman from Nicaragua to win the coveted title. It is also Nicaragua’s first ever major crown.

Anntonia Porsild, 27, of Thailand, whom many pageant pages had selected as the winner, placed first runner-up instead. If she had won, she would have been the first woman to have won two Grand Slam pageants (she won Miss Supranational 2019).

Moraya Wilson, 22, of Australia was second runner-up. The other two finalists were Karla Guilfú of Puerto Rico, 25, and Camila Avella of Colombia, 28, who made history by becoming the first married mother to compete in Miss Universe since 1956.

Rounding up the top 10 were the delegates from the Philippines, El Salvador, Peru, Venezuela and Spain. Completing the top 20 were Chile, India, Jamaica, South Africa, Namibia, USA, South Africa, Nepal, Pakistan (debuting this year) and Portugal (first transwoman to place).

I have so many thoughts about this year’s production that I’ll be sharing during the next live group chat with my fellow pageant connoisseurs this Sunday, at 9:00 PM EST. I invite you all to watch!  Subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven't done so.
