A new Miss USA has been crowned. Michigan’s Alma Cooper took the crown on Sunday, August 4, during the pageant’s 73rd annual ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The 22-year-old of Afro Latina descent, who has a Master’s in data science from Stanford University, beat 50 other contestants in a pageant that included swimwear and evening gown competitions.

Connor Perry of Kentucky was first runner-up, Danika Christopherson of Oklahoma was second runner-up, Christell Foote of Tennessee was third runner-up, and Macy Hudson of Ohio was fourth runner-up.

Cooper is the fourth woman from Michigan to win the title, after Carole Gist in 1990, Kenya Summer Moore in 1993 and Rima Fakih in 2010. Gist was one of the judges in the competition.

Cooper will now represent the USA in the next edition of Miss Universe to be held in Mexico in November.

Congratulations to the new queen!
