Thatiana Diaz, 21, was crowned Miss República Dominicana U.S. 2013 last August. She will represent the Dominican community of the United States  in the 2014 Miss Dominican Republic pageant to be held in Santo Domingo on August 15th. Critical Beauty wishes Thatiana the best of luck in her quest for this coveted national crown.

Tell us a little about yourself, your family and educational background.

My name is Thatiana Diaz and I am from New York City. I was born to Dominican parents, my mother, who works as a Senior Account Executive for an IT company, and my father, who is a business owner. I have one younger brother, who is only two years younger. I am a senior Communications Major at Pace University, am weeks away to earn my degree in hopes to become an editor for a magazine in the future. My passions include writing, being an editor for my university’s newspaper, interning and of course, pageantry.

What prompted you to compete in beauty pageants?

When I was younger, my mom didn't like the fact that I was a tomboy and that I was too shy so my modeling school suggested that she have me participate in pageants. She signed me up to compete for Miss New York Teen USA and I ended up falling in love with pageants during the competition weekend, I won and then went on to compete at the Miss Teen USA Pageant where I made Top 15.

How does it feel being Miss Dominican Republic U.S. 2013?

It’s an amazing feeling to be Miss Dominican Republic U.S 2013 because I get to represent not only the country I’ve lived in all my life, but also my culture. There are millions of Dominicans in the United States and to be able to represent them all is an honor. I love the opportunity this title is giving me in connecting to my roots and my culture to another level.

List three adjectives that best describe you.

Three adjectives that best describe me are ambitious, funny, and simple. I am always eagerly desirous of achieving my dreams and I really put my effort into all of them whether it be becoming the next Miss Universe, becoming a future editor, or graduating from college on the dean’s list. At the same time, I enjoy making people laugh— many people would say I’m a goofball,  I also am simple in that I love everything in my life to be nothing too elaborated or complicated from my jewelry to my sandwich to my pageant dresses.

Name one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses.

One of my strengths is my desire to know more. I never let myself be curious or uneducated on a topic and if I don’t know something, I always pull out my phone or laptop quickly and search it on Google. It really has helped me stay informed of what’s going on around the world and kept me growing in knowledge. One of my weaknesses is how hard I am on myself. It’s important to expect greatness from yourself but it’s also important to understand that not everything can be done and also, sometimes you need help.

You were born in the States. Do you consider yourself American first and Dominican second, or vice versa?

I consider myself to be bi-cultural. I am a proud citizen of the United States but I live the Dominican culture with my family. I speak English and watch American television but I also speak Spanish and celebrate Dominican holidays.

You did internship for Vogue. How was it like?

Interning for Vogue was an eye-opening experience that gave me very thick skin. It was a very hands-on internship in which you learn to be quick and also knowledgeable of the fashion world. I was running from designers like Oscar de la Renta to Jimmy Choo. I left that internship able to name any designer and tell you the difference between five different types of blue.

Do you think that beauty queens should be obliged to be role models especially to girls and young women?

I think that when you choose to compete in pageants, you choose to take on the role of becoming a role model, the same way a politician takes on the same role when choosing to run for office. As a title holder or contestant, you have a spotlight on you and what you choose to do under it is up to each individual but I think it’s important they are role models, especially since young girls look up to you.

Who is the woman you admire most and why?

The woman I admire most is my mother, the true representation of the American Dream. She started off as a receptionist at a job and with determination and the desire to learn more, she is now an executive on Wall Street. She has really worked hard for my brother and I as a single mother and I really admire her every day for the amazing work she does.

What would constitute a "perfect" evening for you?

A perfect evening for me is a night out in New York City. I love to walk around this city and see all that it has to offer, from the parks to the Broadway plays to the people. It being the city that never sleeps, I know I can walk around all night with no worries.

Would you ever hire someone who has had a serious criminal past?

I would hire someone who has had a serious criminal past because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance.  I believe people can always learn from their actions. This individual served their time and should be given the chance to start over.

If you woke up tomorrow and gained any one ability or quality, what would you want it to be and why?

One ability or freedom I would like to have would be to be able to eat anything and everything and not gain weight or get cellulite. LOL!

What is your most treasured memory?

My most treasured memory is my sixteenth birthday. This was the first and only time I had all of family from everywhere together with all of my closest friends. We were also in the best place to vacation— Disney World. It was truly magical to be able to be with everyone I love in a place I could never forget.

What is your opinion on cosmetic surgery?

I support cosmetic surgery if it helps a person gain confidence and feel better, also, as long as their life is not at risk and it is not to look like someone else.

How do you see yourself 10 years from now?

In 10 years, I see myself as a former Miss Universe being an editor for a well-known magazine living in New York City.

How does it feel like being Miss Missouri USA 2014?

It is living out a dream, something I always wanted to do was a young girl. I still feel like I must be dreaming at times!! I feel so incredibly lucky.

List three adjectives that best describe yourself.

Goofy, tenacious, empathetic.

Name three pet peeves.

A pet peeve of mine is when someone lies, wastes my time,  or takes advantage of others!

As an educated woman who is also very attractive, how do you deal with the stereotyping based on beauty alone?

I think the stereotype really hinders women, it sends the message that woman  can only be beautiful or educated. I fight that stereotype by being educated and not focusing  only on appearance. Personally, I think that smart is sexy!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL IMDIEKE

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

That I am really sincere and genuine.

What makes Missouri unique from the other states?

It is smack dab in the middle of the United States!

How do you influence people to live healthy lives?

I influence others by living a balanced lifestyle that is healthy and easy to maintain. Crash dieting and extreme fitness or diet routines are harmful to not only myself, but others too!

What are you personally doing to save our environment?

I try and to do all the little things that I can such as energy saving light bulbs, driving less, using reusable water bottles, and recycling.

If you could invite three people to dinner, who would it be and why?

Hmmm... Oprah Winfrey because she is a powerful woman and I look up to her. Andy Cohen because he is hilarious and from St. Louis. And Cameron Diaz because I have always loved her. She is a model turned actress and I would love to pick her brain!

What constitutes a "gentleman" today?

A man who respects a woman in all ways. This shows through in how he speaks to her, about her, and how he is willing to compromise for her.

What do you think is the most important social issue facing our generation?

I think a major issue facing my generation is job availability. So many young adults have college education and are unable to put it to good use.

If you could pass any law, what would it be?

I would pass a law requires teenagers to stay in high school till the age of 18. I think 16 is too young to allow them to stop education, I don't believe they really know the life long consequences they might suffer from dropping out.

Many mainstream artists today are conveying negative messages through their songs. Do you believe these songs should be played on the radio?

That's a good question, because keeping an artist off the radio for their message would be taking away their freedom of speech to an extent. I think that what a person listens to can affect their speak, thoughts, and actions. It is concerning and I think the best solution is for people to take more self-responsibility when it comes to making positive choices.

What do you do for fun?

If I can't be outside, then I love to thrift shop. I have a knack for finding the best items while thrift shopping!

Why do you want to be the next Miss USA?

Aside from it being the opportunity of a lifetime and a life long dream I really want the chance to utilize my passion for helping others on a large scale.

How does it feel being Miss Massachusetts 2014?

I feel like such a grown up! When I was Miss Massachusetts Teen USA in 2008, I remember looking up to Jessica Rafalowski, Amy Diaz, Jackie Bruno, and so many of the other Miss girls from that year. Now it’s my turn to play in the big leagues.

Name three things that you value most in life and why.

1)  Great acting. I love being moved by an honest and great performance.
2) Traveling adventures. It’s so important to see the world. I learn so much from traveling and observing other cultures.
3) Friends and family. Otherwise none of this is worth it.

Describe your idea of happiness.

My mom and I caught a flight to Philly on our way out of Atlantic City. It’s on my bucket list to travel to all 50 states (I’ve been to 25) but I cannot check a place off the list unless I have done something there- simply driving through doesn’t count. We ran as fast as we could across the lawn to see the Liberty Bell and then to Market Street to grab a Philly Cheesesteak so we wouldn’t miss our flight. It was short and sweet, but it was so much fun. We laughed like crazy and made an adventure out of nothing. Little things like that make me very happy.

What makes Massachusetts stand out from the other 49 states?

Ah, there’s so much to choose from! The history, Cape Cod, the sports teams! I’m a huge fan of the New England Patriots. I put myself on the (12 year) wait list for season tickets two years ago. The Patriots Nation in Massachusetts is something that can’t be beat!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGINA VAUGHAN

If you were a fruit, what would you be and why?

I would be a green apple. I eat so many of them; I would probably just turn into one. I love to add slices of them to grilled cheeses and turkey sandwiches.  Weird, but delicious, I swear!

Describe your dream man.

I love a tall, dark, and handsome man, but I need to be able to laugh with him. I really love when you find someone who inspires you to be the best version of yourself. It’s important for me to have someone who I can go on adventures with, but also snuggle on the couch with. Balance is key. PS, opening the car door for your lady goes a long way!

Are you more like your mother or father, and why?

My mom! She can make friends anywhere she goes and can talk to anyone.

Why is it that people who are attractive tend to be more successful?

I think passionate people are the most attractive people in the world. Anyone who is passionate about what they do is bound to be incredibly successful.

Do you support gun owners’ rights? Should homeowners be allowed to own guns to protect their families?

Violence is never the answer. However, I support everyone’s second amendment right to protect themselves. But I also feel that strict background checks must be given. People with past criminal history and those who suffer from mental illness should be extensively evaluated.

Do you think pageants matter to anyone outside of pageantry?

I hope so! Pageant women are able to touch so many lives, not just those directly associated with the inner circle of the pageant world. With my title, I have been able to spread my story and struggle with domestic violence, and inspire those that I may not have otherwise had a chance to reach, to stand up for themselves and help recognize and abusive relationship they may be in.

Do you believe that global warming exists or do you agree with critics who say it is a big fraud?

I wouldn’t mind a little warmth after this brutal New England winter, but I do believe that we need to be more conscious of our footprint and educate ourselves on how we can be better about our environment.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TODD WARD

What do you think about so-called “reverse discrimination” against white males in jobs?

I think we need to stop seeing, judging, and labeling everyone based on their race, gender, sexuality, etc. It’s 2014. People need to be seen for their drive, worth ethic, and talent.

If you were to have dinner with three celebrities, who would they be and why?

1)  Jennifer Lawrence. She’s so hilarious and honest. She’s just brilliant.
2) Ellen Degeneres because I think we would have a blast together and I want to persuade her to let me dance with her on her show.
3) Giada De Laurentiis. I would like to cook this said “celebrity dinner” with her, YUM!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I see myself having my own TV show and hopefully traveling the world.

Why do you want to be the next Miss USA?

If I can inspire one person to leave an abusive relationship with my story, I will have done my job. I want to use my voice as Miss USA and ultimately Miss Universe to inspire others to stand up for their freedom and safety, and to leave someone who may be physically or verbally abusing them.

…and I want to cross it off my bucket list!

Jamie Herrell of Cebu City was crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2014 during the beauty pageant's grand coronation night held at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday night.

The 19-year-old beauty from the Queen City of the South is an animal rights advocate, according to the Miss Philippines Earth website.

"My environmental advocacy is anti-animal cruelty. Because I have seen how some people treat animals in a wrong way and I believe animals should be treated with love or at least in a proper manner," she said.

During the question-and-answer portion, Herrell was asked by former Akbayan lawmaker Risa Hontiveros, "Do you think that we, human beings, have been good children to Mother Earth?"

Herrell answered: "Honestly, in my opinion, we haven’t been good children. In fact, I believe that we are the number one cause of her problems, we are the reason why we're having climate change, and we are the reason why we're having floods. But in return, if we can only help her and salvage her, she will help us back and take care of us too."

Herrell's court includes 25-year-old Diane Carmela Querrer who was crowned Miss Philippines Air 2014; Kimberly Covert, Miss Philippines Water 2014; Bianca Paz, Miss Philippines Fire 2014; and Monique Manuel, Miss Philippines Eco Tourism 2014.

Herrell will now compete in Miss Earth 2014 to be held later this year in the Philippines.

Arantza Barba, 24, from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia was crowned Miss Progress International 2014 in Puglia, Italy on May 18. Three sub-titles were awarded respectively to Darline Marie Exume of Haiti, Miss Human Rights 2014; to Jorreni Marcon of Brazil, Miss Progress Health 2014; and to Esterina Rumè of Italy, Miss Cultural Integration 2013. Sweden's Dorotha Bartlewska won the most popular Internet votes.

The pageant boasts itself as "the only competition in the world that emphasizes the role of women for their social commitment." Arantza's platform is to ban the use of plastic bags. The first pageant took place in 2010, but no pageants were held from 2011 to 2013. According to pageant organizer Giuseppe Borillo, the pageant did not materialize in 2011 because of "extremely serious health problems suffered by the President". In 2012, there was no pageant because Christine Huang from Taiwan "did not fulfill a signed agreement as host in Wuhan, China." And in 2013, the organization "had to recover from the heavy damages suffered from Huang's lack of professionalism."
