Miss Hercules 2013 crowned
Miss Hercules 2013 Kristiana Sunga with 1st runner-up Courtney Dawson and 2nd runner-up Janet Lares, with American Idol finalist, DeAndre Brakensick who was the featured entertainer. |
Two years ago, I had the privilege of judging the first ever Miss Hercules pageant. Don't be fooled by the name: it is not a body building competition, but a scholarship pageant based in the small city of Hercules in California, just less than 30 minutes from San Francisco. The pageant is owned and produced by Richard James White, the president of the Miss Hercules Organization (MHO) who is a successful realtor as well as a big aficionado of pageants. Richard has been following Critical Beauty for many years and we have known each other for almost ten. Richard had always dreamed of giving back to his community, and what better way to do it than providing an opportunity for young ladies to shine and to compete in a pageant. The first pageant turned out to be a huge success!
Last Sunday, April 14th, the pageant returned and I was asked to judge again. But this time, it was more memorable for several reasons: it had the full support of the entire city, took place in a bigger venue (Hercules Community Center), attracted more sponsors and attendees, had a distinguished and more diverse panel of judges, featured an American Idol finalist, introduced its own theme song ("Miss Hercules") sung by a choir of girls dubbed as the Little Sisters of Miss Hercules (reminiscent of the Little Sisters from Miss Universe), and selected its first Mister Hercules, Michael Sanchez, among the 9 young, male escorts. And even though the number of contestants (9) was smaller than that of the first pageant (12), each young woman who competed this year came more prepared and competitive.
The winner of the 2013 Miss Hercules pageant is Kristiana Sunga, 15, who represented the district of Bayside. The 1st runner-up is Miss Gem Stones Courtney Dawson, 18, and the 2nd runner-up is Miss Baywood Janette Lares, 18. Sunga's prize package includes a $5,000 scholarship, an all-expenses paid trip to Puerto Vallarta, an exquisite sash, and a beautiful crown by renowned Venezuelan jewelry designer George Wittels who designs crowns for the Miss Venezuela pageant. Sunga also received the following special awards: Miss Talent, Miss Charity, Miss Photogenic, Miss Eloquence, and Miss Critical Beauty that included $200 worth of beauty and skin care (and animal test-free) products from Lush Cosmetics.
On a personal note, I wish to thank Richard for inviting me to judge the pageant again - which gave me the opportunity to say hello again to his amazingly talented and congenial staff; to reunite with the first Miss Hercules, Domonique Jones (who looked grown up and even more beautiful now); and to finally meet the fabulous Peter Sereno, who coached Jennifer Hawkins to win Miss Universe 2004 and who runs Dear Pageant Girl, a popular pageant consultation resource based in Sydney, Australia. Yup, Richard flew Peter all the way from the Land Down Under to judge the pageant. Thank you, Richard, for organizing a marvelous event and for enriching the lives of everyone involved with it! - Rafa Delfin

Hinarani de Longeaux to represent France in Miss Universe 2013
Last Saturday, the Miss France Committee president Sylvie Tellier announced that Hinarani de Longeaux, who represented Tahiti in the 2013 Miss France competition and placed 1st runner-up, will officially represent France in the 2013 Miss Universe pageant. This information was taken from the French-language site, Lesnouvelles.pf, which also cites that the Miss Universe 2013 pageant will be held in Las Vegas on December 19th. Critical Beauty does not acknowledge the date and venue since no official statement has been released yet from the Miss Universe Organization. However, Tellier claims that the change was made due to schedule conflict. The Miss France 2014 pageant will be held on December 7th in Dijon and requires the presence of the actual Miss France Marine Lorphelin. Meanwhile, Lorphelin will compete in Miss World 2013 in September in Indonesia. This is the second year in a row that France is not sending the actual national titleholder to Miss Universe. In 2012, France was represented by Marie Payet, who was second runner-up to actual winner Delphine Wespiser.

Miss America 2014 will be crowned without the Miss America theme song

“There she is, Miss America"... except this year’s winner won’t be hearing those words.
Due to a licensing dispute, Miss America 2013 will be crowned in September without the iconic “Miss America” song.
Miss America Organization vice president Sharon Pearce confirmed to the Press of Atlantic City that the familiar tune, played almost every year since 1955, will no longer be used at the pageant.
The dispute stems from a lawsuit filed by the late songwriter Bernie Wayne’s wife, who claimed the song was used without a proper license in 2011 and 2012.
For a few years in the 1980s, the “Miss America” song was silent during another contract dispute, and last year, the pageant played instrumental music instead for Laura Kaeppeler’s crowning. This year, organizers could also choose to use another tune like “Look at Her” and “Miss America the Beautiful.”
Wayne first wrote the song while sitting in a barber’s chair in 1955. In that year’s pageant, host Bert Parks sang it on the televised broadcast to winner Lee Meriwether. Before his death in 1993, Wayne also wrote the song “Blue Velvet,” as well as many other familiar jingles, commercial tunes, and television and movie songs.
