Puerto Rico wins Miss International 2014

Valerie Hernandez, a 21-year-old student and model from San Juan, of Puerto Rico has been crowned Miss International 2014 at the pageant's 54th annual event held November 11 at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. She is the second woman from her country to have won the coveted title (Laurie Simpson won in 1987).

Top five: Hernandez (center) poses with first runner-up, Colombia's Zuleika Suárez (far left), second runner-up, Thailand's Punika Kulsoontornrut (far right), third runner-up, United Kingdom's Victoria Tooby (second from left) and fourth runner-up, Finland's Milla Romppanen (second from right)
Completing the top 10 semifinalists were the delegates from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Panama and Indonesia. Colombia won two special awards (Miss Friendship, Best Dresser), Indonesia won Best National Costume, France won Miss Perfect Body, and India won Miss Internet Beauty. 73 young women competed in this year's edition of the pageant which was live streamed.
Hernandez was officially crowned by Miss International 2013 winner Bea Santiago of the Philippines.

Filipino pageant fans were hoping a back-to-back victory with their delegate Bianca Guidotti who failed to advance to the finals. Hernandez's victory was a shocker, since she had not figured on most of the fans' list of favorites. Miss Thailand, who had placed third in Miss Earth 2013 and eventually was dethroned for not fulfilling her duties as Miss Earth Air 2013, placed third again in Miss International 2014.

The live stream started at 4:00 PM Tokyo time (Nov. 11), which would be 2:00 AM (Nov. 11) in Boston. I missed the first two hours of the show as I had fallen asleep at around 11:30 PM. When I woke up at 3:30 AM, the contestants were already parading in their evening gowns. Meanwhile, ardent pageant fans were expressing their comments at the Critical Beauty Fan Page; many of them were not happy with Hernandez's victory and were favoring either Miss Colombia or Miss United Kingdom instead. Oh, well... that is Miss International to you and me... it is ultimately the least predictable pageant of all! :) - Rafa Delfin

Pernille Sørensen was crowned Miss World Denmark 2014 in Copenhagen on October 4, 2014. She will represent Denmark in the upcoming 2014 Miss World pageant to be held in London, England on December 14, 2014. Critical Beauty would like to thank Pernille and her national director, Lisa Lents, for granting us this interview and wishes her the best of luck at Miss World!

Who is the real Pernille Sørensen?

The real Pernille Sørensen is a young woman living in a city called Aalborgwhich is thefourth largest city inDenmark. Her closest family contains her wonderful parents and her beautiful little sister, Kristina, with whom she has a very close relationship.

Pernille has a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, and at the moment, she is studying at Aalborg University, where she is getting her Master of Science in Public Health.

Pernille lives an active lifestyle and it is very important to her to work out regularly and eat healthy. She is very passionate about health, and she finds it very interesting to see health and well-being in many different contexts and from different perspectives.

When time allows it she loves to express herself creatively through drawing, painting and photography. Furthermore she has a passion for beauty and loves experimenting with makeup, as well as reading about the latest beauty products.

To travel is also one of Pernille’s great passions. She thinks it is so inspiring to experience new places and she is very open-minded in the meeting with new people and different cultures.

How would your friends describe you?

I have asked my friends and family about this question, and they all described me as a caring and emphatic young woman, with a very calmtemperamentandwith a sympatheticand accommodatingway tomeet new people. My dear father described me as a very loving and caring big sister, as I have always taken good care of my little sister. He also described me as a very patient person, which has also been confirmed by former nurse colleagues. Some of my friends think that I often tend tobea little toostructured anda bit of acontrol freak.

Define happiness. What makes you happy?

I am happy when I conquer the challenges I give myself in life. With every challenge – big or small – I am developing as a person, and that makes me very pleased and strong.

     I am also very
happy when Icanmakemy closest ones happy. I am easilyinfluenced byothers' moodsandtherefore it is importantto metohelpspreadgood energy andgive peoplea smilealong the way. I am in general verygenerouswith complimentsand I amgood at tellingothers whenthey do agood job.

What is the biggest problem that your country, Denmark, is facing right now and what do you propose to resolve it?

Denmark is characterized by its social balance and universal welfare services, such as free healthcare and free education, and the Danes have been named the happiest people in the world in several studies. But if I should name a problem in our country I have been a part of and have seen on a daily basis, it would have to be, that our healthcare system often can be insufficient in terms of lack of resources, lack of space and not enough hands to give the best quality of healthcare possible. As a nurse I have felt the frustration of not feeling like you can do your best because of this. SometimesI wonder aboutsome ofthe thingswe spend money on, whilewe saveinhealth care andthe elderly.

What would constitute a "perfect" evening for you?

I love meeting up with old and new friends and just talk about everything - great and small. Combining this with a delicious food and maybe watching a movie in the theater afterwards, this may be the perfect evening for me.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would you change and why?

I wish that there were nofaminein the world. No one, young or old, shouldstarve, and it breaks my heart knowing that in 2014there are about 24.000 peopledying every day ofstarvation - especially whenthere are countries that have abundance of food andwhere obesity is one of the main problems.

How do you respond to a homeless person on the street asking you for money?

When a homeless person approaches me on the street, I instinctively tend to give him/her a little money. But sometimes I afterwards think about, if the person maybe would use the money tofinancean abuse of some kind, and I would actually rather have bought him/her some food in the first place or asked about the person's situation to get to know what he/she truly needs.

What is your idea of fun? How do you enjoy yourself to have fun?

I really enjoy trying new things in form of physical activities, such as ice skating, rock climbing, scuba diving, canoeing, skiing and dancing.  I love using my body in different ways and challenging myself – and if these activities are combined with a lot of friends around me, this is my idea of fun.

If you could go back in time to any time period, which one would you choose & why?

I would go back to my teenage years and tell myself not to worry about things I still could not change. I have spent too many years thinking about what other people would think of me and not just enjoying life as a young girl.

What is your opinion on cosmetic surgery? Would you consider submitting to it some day?

I have absolutely nothing againstplastic surgeryas long asyou do itfor your own sake - however, I havenevermyselfhadanykind ofplastic surgery. If there is somethingabout your appearance that really upsets you andperhaps is diminishing your quality of life, I think it is alright. In returnI thinkthat youshouldsay no toplastic surgeryif you feelpressured intoitbyyour surroundings, bygirlfriends, by boyfriends or by family.

At the moment I do not see myself having any cosmetic surgery in the future, but I am not dismissive about it.

Who is the woman you admire most and why?

It would be Beyoncé,because shefor meis the ultimatedefinitionofgirl powerandindependence. In addition to beinga greatmusicianandsinger, sheinspiresmeby being sodown-to-earth despite of herfame. She also gives a lot to charity and I thinksheis a greatrole model formanyyoung girls.

If women were to rule the world by 2050, how different would the world be?

I do not think that good leadership is a matter of gender. There have been female political leaders throughout history and like their male counterparts, some may have been good leaders, others may not. Some may say that women possess an inborn trait to be more caring or righteous, but I think that both men and women possess these qualities, and it is more a matter of personality than a matter of gender.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done, and what did you learn?

The most adventurous thing I have ever done was completing a diving certificate during a trip to Thailand and Malaysia. By doing this I had to exceed some personal boundaries, because I have been quite hydrophobic during my entire childhood. I learned that I had to try some new things in my life, even though it scared me at first. It is so important for me to evolve as a person throughout my whole life, and I can only evolve if I dare to challenge myself.

If you were to come back as an animal in the next life, what would you be and why?

I think I would come back as a dog. Like dogs, I am loyal and devoted and Ilike tobein the company ofpeople whomean something tome.I'm not thatgood at beingalone fortoo longand I enjoy long walks with a good friend.

Do you think social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, have a positive or negative influence on teens?

It depends. It is upsetting to see young girls being affected by the social media in connection with getting a wrong image of what is a normal appearance. As a nurse student I have worked with girls with eating disorders and low self-esteem, and these girls' understanding of health and striving for perfection is so heartbreaking. In their teenage years the teens are actively seeking to find an identity, and it is sad if they believe that they have to be thin to exemplify beauty and success.

On the other hand I think that the social media is a great way of spreading inspiring posts and stimulate young teens to build up their self-esteem and be kind and helpful human beings.

Exposure to information and news about events occurring around the world can also develop cultural and political awareness and it challenges the teens toreflect on different causes.

If you were on a TV talk show and could get one message across to the viewers, what subject would it be on?

There is not muchin this worldthat Ioutrighthate, but itreally bothers me whenpeople smoke cigarettes. Smoking isthe cause ofthe highest number oflifestyle-related deaths inDenmarkand I wishthat people stop smoking. So ifI could getmore people toquit smoking, I wouldfeel like I had madea great difference bothfor thesmokers themselves, their surroundingsand the health care system.

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or deceased), who would it be and what would you do with that person?

I would spend one last day with my dear aunt who passed away last year due to cancer. I would take her to see her family, parents, husband and children. Our whole family was heartbroken when we lost such a loving and caring soul, and she was a great inspiration to me.

If you were judging a pageant, what would be the most important quality that you’d look for in the winner?

Allwho take the timeto be friendlyand help other people isbeautiful inmy opinion, and these are very important qualities to me. Additionally thereis nothing moremesmerizingthana sincereand joyfulsmile.

Do you think the world will be a better or a worse place 100 years from now?

It is very hard to say, and the situation in the world is always changing in different directions. For example I think that we will find a cure for cancer and find new vaccines, but I think that in the future there will just be another new life-threatening disease or epidemic that we cannot control.

I hope that we in the future willbe moreenvironmentally consciousthrough green energy
for example, so we can reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. So many beautifulplaces in the worldwill not existin just50 yearsifwe continue tomistreatour earthas we do now.

I also hopethat we in the futurewill be able toreduce or eliminatefamine andextreme poverty in the world.

Why do you want to become Miss World 2014?

As a nurse, it is very natural for me to want to help and make a difference forpeople, and I hopethat I, through the competition, can bring focus to concernsthat are close to my heart. I am amazed how huge a difference the MissWorldOrganizationthrough the yearshas done fordisadvantaged andill childrenaroundthe world.Iwould be soproud tobe a partofthis endeavor!

It will also bea great honor formeto be arole model to others and it willmean a lot tomeif I couldinspire others tomake a difference forpeople in needofhelp.

     I am a
young woman whois alwayslooking for new waysto challengemyself, as I believethat it isimportant toconstantly evolveas a person, and by doing this, I hope I can inspire others to follow their dreams and always seize the opportunities they get in life!

Tegucigalpa, Honduras (CNN) -- A Honduran beauty queen has disappeared days before the start of the Miss World pageant. Investigators are searching for Miss Honduras World María José Alvarado Muñoz (above) and her sister, who went missing on Thursday, police in the Central American country said Sunday. Family members reported their disappearance on Saturday, police said.

Eduardo Zablah, director of the pageant in Honduras, told CNN affiliate Televicentro that the sisters were last seen getting into a vehicle after attending a party last week.

Contestants from more than 120 countries are scheduled to start arriving in London this week for early rounds of the Miss World pageant. They'll face off in a final round on December 14.

Alvarado, a 19-year-old student from Santa Bárbara, Honduras, describes herself as an aspiring diplomat who enjoys playing volleyball and soccer in her spare time, according to a profile of her on the pageant's website.
She beat 18 contestants to win the Miss World Honduras crown in April.

Ariadna Gutierrez was elected Miss Colombia 2014 on Monday, becoming the first representative of the state of Sucre to ever win the award. She is expected to compete in 2016 Miss Universe pageant.
The 20-year-old professional model was voted new Miss Colombia during the National Beauty Contest gala held in Cartagena. At the coronation ceremony, she received a near perfect 9,9 note. She was elected out of 26 candidates.
It is the first time in the history of the pageant that the top prize was given to a candidate from the Sucre state at the Caribbean Coast of Colombia.

In one of the most-watched annual events in Colombia, the jury elected Natalia Ochoa (Antioquia) as the first runner-up, Jesica Paola Castañeda (Cauca) as the second runner-up, and Viviana Davila (Bogota) as the third runner-up.
Gutierrez, who was hotly tipped for the grand prize before the ceremony, was born on December 25, 1994 in Sincelejo. She is 5’8″ tall and her “dimensions” are 33-24-35. A Communications student, she speaks English and German.
When asked about what she would advise the peace negotiators in Havana, Gutierrez replied “I would ask them to be wise, which is the quality that all Colombians should have at this point.”
In an interview with the Cromos fashion magazine, the newly elected Miss Colombia revealed that in school she used to be into sports, training volleyball and long-jump.
However, she has always dreamed about the National Beauty crown and has never missed a single broadcast of the annual ceremony.
This year’s gala took place in Cartagena in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the National Beauty Pageant.
The much celebrated Colombian beauty contests were recently challenged by the initiative from the authorities of the state of Antioquia, who canceled funding for the popular Miss Antioquia beauty pageant and –under the leadership of the governor’s wife — put that funding in a talent show for young women.

Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her sister Sofia Trinidad, 23, had not been seen since 13 November, said beauty pageant organiser Eduardo Zablah.

Both were last spotted leaving a party in the Santa Barbara region and four people have been questioned over the pair's disappearance, including Maria Alvarado's boyfriend.

Honduran police chief Jose Coello confirmed: "Four people are under arrest. They include the owner of the party venue and Sofia Trinidad's boyfriend. They are being investigated."

Alvarado was crowned Miss Honduras World 2014 on 26 April in San Pedro Sula, Cortes, and was set to compete in the Miss World competition in London on 14 December.

San Pedro Sula has been described by some as the murder capital of the world with over 1,200 murders a year among a population of almost one million people.

This week, the pair's mother, Teresa, pleaded to God to release the girls from their unknown circumstances.

"Open your hearts and understand my pain," she said. "There is an all-powerful God that sees everything and I hope you set them free."

The second runner-up is Kris Tiffany Janson of the Philippines (left) and the 1st runner-up is Jeslie Margal of Cuba. The other three finalists were Misses South Africa, Argentina and Portugal.

Originally, a top 5 list was announced, but in an interesting turn of events, pageant officials announced that Miss Philippines tied with Miss Thailand in the semis, thus allowing Thailand to be included in the final 6. Curiously, both countries also share the Continental Queen award for Asia & Oceania. Thailand's sudden and questionable inclusion in the top 6 immediately trended in pageant message boards and disappointed many Filipino fans who were hoping for their country's first Miss Intercontinental crown.

Completing the top 15 were the delegates from Puerto Rico, Canada, Myanmar, Turkey, Nigeria, Mauritius, England and Poland.

A former Miss Indiana pageant winner was arrested in Bloomington Wednesday on several charges.
At 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to 300 block of East 8th Street on a report of an intoxicated female knocking on the caller's apartment door for about half an hour.
The caller said the female was banging on the door and yelling, "let me in." Officers arrived found Terrin Thomas (photo) still outside of the door.
Thomas was won the Miss Indiana pageant in 2013.
Bloomington police said Thomas appeared to be intoxicated based upon her slurred speech and abusive attitude toward them. The officer also reported noticing a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Thomas.
Thomas was wearing shorts, a long-sleeve shirt and socks. She told police she was looking for her boyfriend's apartment.
Officers attempted to get a phone number to call the boyfriend, but Thomas said she did not have her phone or the number.
Thomas then attempted to leave the area. Officers said Thomas kept repeating herself and would not listen to questions.
At that time she was placed under arrest. When asked to sit in the rear of the vehicle, officers say she refused and pushed away. Thomas was eventually placed in the squad car and taken to the Monroe County jail.
She was booked in on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.

Rolene Strauss, a 22-year-old fourth-year medical student from South Africa, was crowned Miss World 2014 Sunday afternoon, December 14, at the ICC Auditorium in London's ExCel Centre. She is the third woman from her country to have won the coveted title (Penelope Anne Coelen won first in 1958, followed by Anneline Kriel in 1974 who won by default when the original winner, Helen Morgan of the UK, resigned four days after her victory).  Asked why she should be the next Miss World, Strauss replied, "Being proudly South African, I have first-hand experience that unity, respect, forgiveness exists those all the aspirations of the Miss World organization, so it would be amazing to represent an organization that is a beacon of hope all over the world."

The first runner-up is Edina Kulcsár of Hungary and the second runner-up is Elizabeth Safrit of the United States. Completing the top 5 were Courtney Thorpe of Australia and Carina Tyrrell of England. Included in the top 11 were the delegates from India, Guyana, Brazil, Mexico, Kenya and Thailand (who won the People's Choice award and was automatically fast-tracked to the semifinals).

The remaining delegates included in the top 25 roster were Misses Bolivia, China PR, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Sudan, Vietnam, Finland, Ghana, Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, Scotland, Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago. Malaysia's Dewi Liana Seriestha won the Talent award after she beat Scotland's Ellie McKeating in a sing-off contest.

The two-and-a-half hour show was broadcast by several international networks including the E! Channel in the United States where it started at 10:00 AM, East Coast Time (it was 2:00 PM in London). The show was also streamed live via the Official Miss World channel on YouTube, although it was delayed by a minute. This year's format resembled last year's and the years before: each contestant's country was announced as she sashayed towards the front of the stage while the camera zoomed at her face for quick three seconds. We would never see most of the girls this close ever again. This year, 25 semifinalists were chosen, but the selection process proved once again to be just as confusing and questionable as before. Why, for instance, Miss Bosnia & Herzegovina Isidora Borovčanin did not make the cut even after she won the Top Model contest, whereas Miss Trinidad & Tobago Sarah Jane Waddell did even though she only placed in Top 29 of the Sports & Fitness event? The same can be said with Miss Vietnam Nguyễn Thị Loan who had not placed in any event at all. Weird. Also, this year saw five winners - instead of the usual one or two - of the Beauty With A Purpose award: Brazil's Julia Gama, Guyana's Rafieya Husain, India's Koyal Rana, Indonesia's Maria Sastrayu, and Kenya's Idah Nguma.  Finally, Miss Thailand Nonthawan Thongleng winning the People's Choice vote is deemed suspect by many Filipino pageant fans who are more passionate about pageants than Thais - and bigger in numbers - who had laboriously voted for Miss Philippines Valerie Weigmann

Rolene is crowned by her predecessor Megan Young of the Philippines

Overall, the production was more predictable than the actual results of the pageant. Seeing the contestants wearing their national costumes in the opening number and then seeing selected contestants perform in the "Dances Of the World" segment was always delightfully entertaining. There were also some endearing moments, such as Misses Malaysia, Canada, Scotland and Thailand serenading MWO Chairman Julia Morley to the tune of Josh Groban's hit song, "You Raise Me Up," and the show paying a tribute to Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai who came out on stage with her husband, daughter and mother. Aishwarya, looking as beautiful as ever, then turned to Morley and praised her for her lifetime dedication to raise funds for needy children through the pageant's Beauty With A Purpose program. Morley was then congratulated by several former Miss World titleholders who presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Congratulations to Rolene Strauss and to the people of South Africa for winning the blue crown!

Fraud alert: Miss Universal Peace and Humanity Organization

An event that was supposed to promote universal peace and understanding ended up causing universal turmoil and chaos instead!

#PageantScams #PageantScandals #StupidPeople #DumbAsses #FoolsForTheCrown

Someone had alerted me to the a new pageant called Miss Universal Peace and Humanity, run by an organization of the same name (MUPHO). The debut was supposed to have taken place in Lebanon last Wednesday, December 10, 2014 and a representative from India, Ruhi Singh (below) was supposedly crowned as the first winner, along with two runners-up from Australia (Rebecca Boggiano) and Palestine (Sofia Alkhadra). On her Facebook page, pageant director Asra Shahid posted on November 25 that the pageant would be held in Lebanon ("10TH DECEMBER 2014 WE ARE GOING TO LEBANON"). She even posted photos of the official winner's sash and profiles of several contestants. However, there are no photos or video clips from the coronation; eventually, it was discovered that Singh was handpicked as the winner during a press conference held on December 10. Incidentally, Singh and the delegates from Australia and Palestine were the only contestants present at the said event and that the pageant had been previously cancelled three times.

PHOTO FROM RUHI SINGH'S FACEBOOK PAGE

A week before the "coronation," Shahid had posted on her Facebook (Nov. 29) the following status which prompted interrogation, frustration and anger from several directors and/or followers.

Shahid failed to explain why her organization had chosen "wrong countries" for her pageant and why these countries were being problematic. Suspicions arose from interested parties who demanded an explanation from Shahid, but it appears that Shahid has neither acknowledged nor responded any of the inquiries. One contestant from Puerto Rico, Ashley Ruiz, posted: "I don't understand I write an email to Asra Shahid and she Don't answer, about this situation my country needs to know what's finally it's going to happens whith the pageant, we invest time and preparation. For this pageant and don't even an email I will love to get an answer."

Another poster, Melody Njekwa, wrote: "To start with i dont these organisers have been honest because they have changed the host dates many times. Secondly, the first host country was cyprus then they change at the last minute that its labanon so disorganized! A week ago she put up a status saying visaz and tickets for 70girls were ready and the other 70 wil b ready soon so suddenly just 10 are ready.why cant the 70 go?how does she go on to say we choose wrong countries for our pageant when its miss peace and humanity which shud over look it and bring people together. Asra shahid dear then wat is peace when other countries are wrong?this pageant No its not safe!"

Based on Njekwa's comment, Shahid appears to have confirmed that the first 70 countries would participate because their visas had already been approved and that their tickets had been purchased (I assume that Shahid herself had purchased the round-trip airfare for all the contestants). And from the tone of Njekwa's voice, she seems to be lecturing Shahid about the real meaning of peace, that is, if the pageant is all about promoting universal peace and humanity, then why would Shahid belittle other countries by calling them "wrong?"

Perhaps the loudest protest came from Kayleigh Vanity Van Amson, who was supposed to represent the Netherlands at Shahid's "bizarre" pageant. Van Amson wrote a lengthy message to Shahid accusing her of unprofessionalism, incompetence and lying ("...this is one big mindfuck with lies and lies and lies.") The message appears in the Facebook page of Miss Universal Peace & Humanity Thailand.

A couple of national directors did not shy away from expressing their contempt at Shahid:

(***Pether Hultman is the director for Sweden)

Weeks before the brouhaha, Kayleigh Vanity Van Amson posted a picture of her national costume:

While Ashley Ruiz posted a picture of the evening gown that she was going to wear:

Girls, save your wardrobe for a real honest to goodness pageant instead!

The official banner. Notice the misspelling of the word "universal" and the overall amateur and cheap-looking design of the banner. One wonders, too, if the images of young women on the banner are the official photographs sent by the national directors themselves, or were "stolen" from other websites or personal pages. Asra Shahid (Photo from the Facebook page of MUPHO)

And who exactly is Asra Shahid? On her Facebook page, she describes herself as the "CEO/Executive Director at Miss Universal Peace & Humanity Pageant Organization" and "Executive Director at World Peace Mission Organization." She lives in Beirut, but comes from Nicosia, Cyprus. She is married to a certain Dr. Muhammad Shahid Amin Khan, the "World Ambassador" and President of International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) whose headquarters is based in Pakistan and whose mission is to "facilitate the creation of cooperative networks and economic development programs... promote human rights, peace, gender equality, health, equality, economic development and educational access, awareness regarding the rights of women, children and youth in developing nations and wherever needed."      It didn't take me too long to figure out that IHRC  - for all its "noble" intents and purposes - is vehemently anti-Israel and strongly supports the fictitious "Palestinian" people. So much for peace and diplomacy! LOL

Last May, Ambassador-Dr. Shahid Amin Khan presented the Shield of Honor to Pakistani actress Veena Malik for her humanitarian work. Last month, Veena and her husband Asad Bashir Khan Khattak"were sentenced to 26 years in prison by a regional, anti-terrorism court for allegedly airing a blasphemous programme." The show played a religious (Islamic) song while staging a mock marriage of Malik with Bashir.  (Source: Reason magazine) Now if Amin Khan is really sympathetic towards women and is committed to promoting women's rights, let's hope that he will be able to plead with the courts to reverse the sentence and allow the couple to be free. But I am not counting on it. Committing blasphemy in Muslim-dominated Pakistan could very well be your passport to death.

And what do I think of this whole pageant fiasco? Well, for one thing, I don't have any sympathy towards anyone who who gets involved with a "pageant" without doing a thorough research and background check of the organizer(s), without analyzing all necessary documentation, and without communicating with the organizer(s) in a tangible fashion (phone calls, Skype, online chats or even meeting in person). I have been following the pageant industry for over twenty years - and just like in any industry - you will find either good individuals who will raise you up, or bad individuals who will bring you down - and it is the latter group that gives pageantry a bad name. A pageant is only good when the organizer(s) are totally transparent, professional, accessible, trustworthy and easy to work with. And it also helps to ask tons of questions. If the organizer(s) cannot provide satisfactory and honest answers, then run away as fast as you can!
